First edition. 8vo., xii, 488pp., folding tinted lithograph frontispiece, 12 plates including 6 coloured lithographs bird plates by Keulemans, folding coloured map, original green cloth gilt, small piece of paper pasted to verso of frontispiece else a fine copy. Provenance: Pinchinthorpe House, Guisborough bookplate, (home of big-game hunter and author, Sir A. E. Pease, 1857-1939), with a posthumous inscription to verso of half-title dated 1940 attesting to the book being from his library.
A valuable work by the noted geologist and zoologist. Blanford was attached to the Abyssinian Expedition in 1867 and accompanied the troops to Magdala. The plates by Keulemans are very attractive and feature six species which were new to science. Nissen ZBI, 406; Anker 44.
