FRASER, James Baillie

An historical and descriptive account of Persia from the earliest ages to the present time: with a detailed view of its resources, government, population, natural history, and the character of its inhabitants, particularly of the wandering tribes; including a description of Afghanistan and Beloochistan.

Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1834. First edition. Small 8vo, illustrated with a folding engraved map, 7 full-page plates and engravings in the text, light browning to text, contemporary blue full polished calf, covers elaborately decorated in blind, spine gilt, extremities and joints lightly worn, a very good copy.

In spite of his limited knowledge of the language, Fraser travelled extensively in Persia. In 1821 he accompanied Dr. Jukes on his mission to Tehran and travelled, disguised as a Persian, to Tabriz via Meshed and Kurdistan. The present work includes a short history from pre-Islamic Persia to the reign of Fath Ali Shah. Ghani p.140.
