In 1878 during the second Afghan War Sir Frederick Roberts advanced by way of the Kurram Valley and the Peiwar Kotal to Kabul. The Kurram Valley, on the Kohat border of the North-West frontier of India, was inhabited by the Turis, a tribe of Turki origin, who were given their independence by the British in 1880 in return for their support during the second Afghan war.
