An account of a journey made in 1873 for intelligence purposes on the northern Persian frontier from Sarakhs to the environs of the Caspian. Russia was a threatening presence for the British in the region north of Afghanistan and the book concludes with "A political and strategical report on Central Asia" but the rest is an account of his experiences and encounters during his travels in the region.
