BATCHELOR, John

The Ainu and their folk-lore

R.T.S., London 1901. First edition. 8vo., xxvi, 604pp., frontispiece and numerous illustrations throughout, original brown pictorial cloth gilt, snag to spine repaired, hinges cracked but firm, a very good copy.

Batchelor (1854-1944) went to Hokkaido in 1876 on the advice of his doctor in search of a cold climate. He lived amongst the Ainu for the next sixty years, during which time he devoted himself to the study of their culture and language. This is his most comprehensive work on the subject. We have also seen copies in blue cloth with a gilt vignette to the upper cover, but are not aware of priority. Cordier Japonica 619.
