PERCIVAL, Robert.

An account of the island of Ceylon, containing its history, geography, natural history, with the manners and customs of its various inhabitants; to which is added, the journal of an embassy to the court of Candy.

Baldwin, London 1803. First edition. 4to., xii, 420pp., 4 maps, some folding, slightly spotted and offset onto text, full contemporary calf, neatly rebacked.

Percival tried to classify three classes of "natives"- the Cingalese of the coast, the Candians of the interior, and the Malays. He touches on the pearl fishery, the town and forts of Columbo, the salt works of the island, the staple commodity of cinnamon and above all the inland capital of Candy.
