A new history of China, containing a description of the most considerable particulars of that vast empire. Written by Gabriel Magaillans, of the Society of Jesus, missionary apostolick. Done out of French.


London, printed for Thomas Newborough, at the Golden Ball, in S. Paul's Church-Yard, 1688. First English edition. 8vo., [24], 148, 193-352 pp., large folding plan of Peking (short tears) by Peyronnet, 1 folding plate, contemporary sprinkled calf gilt, red morocco lettering piece, an excellent copy.

It is perhaps the most comprehensive and perceptive description of China published during the second half of the century. - Lach. A translation by John Ogilby of Doze excelencias da China, by a Portuguese Jesuit. The author began the work in 1650, finishing it by 1668, but it was not brought back to Europe until 1682, by which time the author had been dead for five years. The manuscript was translated into French and published for the first time in Paris in 1687. Cordier, Sinica, 36.
