Chez C. Reinwald, Paris 1861. . First edition. Folio, ( 57 x 41 cms), pp.12, [2] list of plates and subscribers, text in Greek and French, 12 tinted lithographed plates on india paper, all captioned in Greek and French, original printed blue boards, rebacked and recornered, edges rubbed.

The beautiful lithographs are after photographs and include views of Piraeus, the Palace, the Royal Gardens and the University. Blackmer states that there are two other editions of this work, one published in the same year without text and later one published in 1862 two extra plates. However this work appears to be scarce and rarely appears on the market. Vretos was the son of the Earl of Guilford's librarian, earning a living as a journalist and writer working in both Paris and Athens. The subscribers to this copy include the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands Storks, Stephanos Xenos. Blackmer1248;
