BARTHOLDY, Jakob Ludwig Salomon.

Voyage en Gr'ece fait dans les années 1803 et 1804.

Dentu, Paris 1807. First edition in French, 2 volumes, octavo, half-titles, engraved folding map, 2 plates of engraved music, and 15 other plates, 10 coloured by hand, later roan-backed marbled boards, a very good set.

Translated from the German original published in 1805. Bartholdy, a Prussian diplomat, was the first important German to travel in Greece after riedesel. His work is of special interest for its discussions of contemporary Greek culture. It is also important for the information it contains about George Gropius' first journey to Greece. Gropius accompanied Bartholdy on his travels and the plates are after his designs. Gropius lived in Athens for nearly fifty years, including time serving as Austrian Consul and was deeply involved in the social, archaeological, and cultural life of the city. Atabey 68; Weber I 12; Blackmer 87
