SPRATT, Thomas Abel Brimage.

First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xii, [ii], 387; ix, [ii], 435pp., 2 folding coloured maps, 2 plates of inscriptions, 1 plate of coins, 14 tinted lithograph plates (1 a folding panorama, short splits to fold), 24 lithographed illustrations on india paper mounted in the letterpress, contemporary green half morocco gilt, rebacked, red morocco lettering piece, a very good copy.

Spratt became director of the Mediterranean Survey in 1851. The work was interrupted by the Crimean War and not finished until 1860. The results of the survey were published as 'Sailing Directions for the Island of Candia', 1861, while Spratt's archaeological and ethnological interests encouraged him to produce this important book which contains an extremely detailed account of the island, including an appendix describing the Cretan dialect as compared to modern Greek.
