GEORGIRENES, Joseph.

A description of the present state of Samos, Nicaria, Patmos, and Mount Athos. By Joseph Georgirenes, Arch-Bishop of Samos. Now living in London. Translated by one that knew the author in Constantinople. July 14. 1677. Licensed, W. Jane.

London : printed by W. G[odbid]. and sold by Moses Pitt, at the Angel in St. Paul's Church-yard, 1678. First edition.12mo (174 x 108mm.), [16], 112pp., contemporary sheep, without A2-3 (dedication in Greek), binding slightly rubbed and worn. Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield, (armorial bookplate and blindstamp).

This is a work of particular interest because Georgirenes is describing an area he knew very well (Blackmer). Born in Milos, he was archbishop of Samos from 1666 to 1671. In 1676 he arrived in England and met Henry Denton who he had known when Denton was chaplain to the English embassy at Constantinople. Denton translated Georgirenes' manuscript on Samos, Patmos, and Icaria into English, and added a dedication to James, Duke of York, in Greek and English. The Greek dedication is missing from several copies recorded on ESTC and was possibly not issued with all copies. Wing G536; Blackmer 672; Atabey 489.
