WELSH, Colonel James
Military Reminiscences extracted from a journal of nearly 40 years active service in the East Indies.
Smith, Elder and Co, London 1830. First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo, (23 x 15 cms), 34 uncoloured aquatints (some folding) after Welsh, woodcut illustrations of maps, plans, fortresses etc, a few pages with worm tracks in vol 1 affecting a couple of the plates, original green cloth, paper labels, extremities strengthened, cloth varnished, bookplate of Sir Edward Strachey.
Engraved by Robert Havell and F.C.Lewis, (engraver at the courts of George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria), this work remains useful for its descriptions of places and military incidents in Southern India. An unusual feature is the use of aquatint for the maps and plans. This copy belonged to Lord Strachie (Sir Edward Strachey) (1858-1936) a well known liberal politician. Abbey II, 547.
