FITZCLARENCE, George Augustus Frederick
Journal of a route across India, through Egypt, to England in the latter end of the year 1817, and the beginning of 1818.

(33.5 x 26cm., 13 x 101/4 inches, approx. ), LARGE PAPER COPY INSCRIBED TO HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF KENT, half-title, title, xxiv, 502, [ii]pp., 7 engraved maps and plans, 12 plates, of which 9 hand-coloured aquatints, 2 plain aquatints, 1 line engraving, UNCUT in original cloth-backed drab boards, neat repairs to joints, an excellent copy.
Rare large paper copy, not recorded by Abbey who records that the work was bought up by the author and has become scarce. The author was the eldest son of William IV by Mrs. Jordan. In addition to an account of his journey from India to England in 1817-18 while carrying despatches, Fitzclarence discusses his experiences in India together with the political and military operations of the East India Company. In the long section on Egypt he describes at length his contacts with Salt and Belzoni and gives an interesting account of his visits to the Pyramids with them. The plates, illustrating Egyptian and Indian subjects, are after drawings by the author, engraved by R. Havell. Abbey Travel 519; Hilmy 233; Blackmer 597.
