BURTON, R[ichard], pseudonym for Nathaniel Crouch.

A Journey to Jerusalem, containing the travels of fourteen Englishmen in 1667, to the Holy Land, and other memorable places noted in scripture. To which is prefixed, memorable remarks upon the ancient and modern state of the Jewish Nation. Together with a realtion of the Great Council of the Jews in the plains of Hungary, in 1650, to examine the scriptures concerning Christ. By Samuel Beert, an English Gentleman there present. With an account of the wonderful delusion of the Jews by a false messiah at Smyrna, 1666.


Hartford, J.Babcock. 1796. 12mo. (10 x 16.5cm) 132pp., contemporary sheep-backed boards, light wear, contemporary ownership inscriptions to front free endpaper and title verso, piece missing from the lower blank margin of D2 just touching text, scattered very light foxing, a nice copy.

One of the best known works of this prolific author and publisher who specialised in inexpensive but educational and well-regarded little works such as this. The book went through several editions, the earliest appearing in London in 1672, with various additions and alterations to the title. This present example is an early American version, the first American edition being a German language version published in 1792. Cf.
