RELAND, Hadrian.

De Religione Mohammedica Libri Duo.

Utrecht, Broedelet, 1717. 2 parts in one volume, small 8vo, continuous pagination, text in Latin and Arabic, engraved portrait, 4 folding plates, engraved vignette to title, preliminaries browned, otherwise a good copy of this attractive work, in contemporary sprinkled calf, skilfully rebacked preserving original spine, original label lacking.

The first part of this work, entitled Compendium theologiae Mohammedicae arabice et latine is an edition in Arabic, with translation, of a small work similar to Ab^u Sujâ's Mukhtasar and is probably the first printed edition of such an essential Islamic work in the West. The second part is Reland's most important contribution towards a better understanding of Islam in which he sets out to rectify many popular misbeliefs about Islam with quotations from the Koran and other Arabic sources. The plates include the very large plate of the Temple at Mecca and a view of the church of St. Sophia at Constantinople. Schnurrer 388.
