Wright, London 1842. 8vo., 764pp., additional engraved title, engraved frontispiece, 23 engraved plates, light browning to plates, heavier to frontispiece and engraved title (these also with light waterstain), contemporary maroon half morocco lettered in gilt, marbled boards, lightly rubbed.

Lamartine travelled from Marseilles in 1832 aboard his private yacht. He travelled in the style of an Ottoman prince, presented expensive gifts to his hosts, and was known as "l'Emir Français". Lamartine left his famly at Beirut and proceeded to the Holy Land alone. His daughter died of consumption in Beirut and Lamartine returned to France overland via Constantinople having spent sixteen months in the Levant.
