[EGERTON (Francis) Earl of Ellesmere]

[Collection of views in Palestine and Lebanon]

London circa 1845. First edition. Landscape folio (36 x 54cm. approx.), 13 tinted lithographed plates including 7 proofs before letters, modern half red morocco gilt, marbled boards, morocco label to upper board, an excellent copy.

RARE. The attribution of these plates is established by a note in the BL copy, which also contains a letter from Egerton referring to "my lithographs", which he obviously presented as gifts to friends. The first plate alone is signed: "F.E. del't. Hawkins Lithog.". Lord and Lady Francis spent the winter and spring of 1839-40 travelling in the Mediterranean, mostly aboard Lord Francis' own yacht. Lady Francis published her account of the tour in 1841, containing four lithographs, two of which are reproduced in the present collection in larger format. The date is taken from the date of presentation (1846) in the BL copy. Plates as follows: 1. Tomb of Absalo 2. Castle of David, Jerusalem 3. Jewish burying places and tomb Valley of Jehosaphat 4. Pool of Solomon near Bethlehem 5. Fountain of the Apostles road to Jericho 6. Elisha's spring near Jericho 7. Nablous (the ancient Sychem) 8. Fountain near Djenin Hermon in the distance 9.
