Russell was a physician to the English factory in Aleppo for a period from 1740. He learnt Arabic and acquired great influence with the Pasha and people of all creeds. This work was suggested by Fothergill and has been described as one of the most complete pictures of Eastern manners extant (Pinkerton) and was reviewed by Dr Johnson in the Literary Magazine. Blackmer calls for a further four plates in volume one, not called for by Nissen. Blackmer 1458; Nissen ZBI 3534.
