BURTON, Richard Francis; Charles Tyrwhitt Drake.
Unexplored Syria. Visits to the Libanus, the Tulul El Safa, the Anti-Libanus, the Northern Libanus and the Alah.
Tinsley Brothers, London 1872. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo., xx, 360; viii, 400pp., 2 lithographed frontispieces, folding map, 25 lithographed plates, 11 of which folding, half-titles to both volumes, later blue half morocco gilt for H. Sotheran, Strand (pre-1930), marbled sides and edges, armorial bookplate, an excellent copy.
Burton was Consul at Damascus from 1865-1871. During that period Drake went to Syria as a representative of the Palestine Exploration Fund, but for some reason he left the Fund, and he and Burton continued the exploration of Syria and Lebanon on their own. The work is not a continuous narrative of their travels but consists of articles by Burton, Drake, Mrs. Burton, and others. The plates include shells, plants, and Burton's collection of anthropological materials from the Holy Land (skulls etc.), and the text contains catalogues of these materials. Penzer pp85-88; Blackmer 247; Casada 68.
