First private edition. 8vo, vi, 360pp, 10 maps, ex-libris Sir Felix Schuster with his armorial engraved bookplate pasted down on front endpaper, new front endpapers, corners bumped, some slight staining to the original green cloth, spine gilt lettered; overall an attractive firm copy.
One of only 100 copies printed for private circulation. The first trade edition was not published until 1902. This edition is extremely scarce. Moore travelled extensively in the Alps during the years 1860-81 and in 1864 he climbed with Edward Whymper. Sir Felix Schuster, a prominent banker, discovered his passion for mountaineering , when he was a student at Geneva University. He became successively honorary secretary and vice-president of the Alpine Club who were responsible for publishing a new edition of this book in 1902. Neate M137.
