Large 8vo, (26 x 18 cms),xvi, 460pp. illustrated with 9 full page coloured lithographs including frontispiece, tissue guards, large folding engraved map by W. and A.K. Johnston after Forbes dated 1842 (corrected to 1845), numerous smaller sketch maps and illustrations in text, bookplates, slight spotting on reverse of plates, bound in recent half calf, decorated boards, spine gilt decorated, red morocco labels; a very attractive copy.

James David Forbes (1809-1868), physicist, spent several months in the Alps during the period 1840-42. His "travels and glacier investigations ... yielded scientific results of the first importance" (DNB). Neate F45.
