Burton began his American adventure on a whim; he was weary of the "gorgeousness of the East," the "monotonous savagery" of Africa, and his ongoing feud with Speke. His account is objective although reviewers were critical of his liberal views on Mormonism and polygamy. Penzer pp 68-69
