Contemporary French calf, spine gilt in 6 compartments with raised bands, gilt-lettered morocco labels to two, one compartment of volume 2 with gilt armorial, marbled endpapers, speckled edges; skillful repairs to extremities. Provenance: Jean-Nicolas, comte de Dufort et de Cheverny (gilt armorial added to spine foot of volume 2. See OHR 1488, fer n. 2).
Fine copy of the first edition of "the grand cyclopaedia of Indian history and customs at that date" (Field). "Lafitau gives very extended and very exact details of the customs, manners and religion of the savages of America, though principally the Indians of Canada. He knew well the subject of which he treated, as his acquaintance with Indian customs was acquired by having lived a long time among the Iroquois" (Field).
