ARMITAGE, Albert

Two years in the Antarctic. Being a narrative of the British National Antarctic Expedition by ... second in command and navigator of the 'Discovery,' 1901-1904 ...

Edward Arnold, London 1905. First edition. 8vo., xx, 315pp., 16 pages of ads at end dated October 1905, 1 folding colour map, 28 photographic illustrations on 16 plates including frontispiece, 54 sketched illustrations (5 full-page), scattered light spotting, original green cloth gilt, upper cover lettered in white, spine faded as usual, a few leaves carelessly opened, a few sentences underlined in pencil, light wear to joints.

Normally found with an illustration in black to the upper cover. This example, without illustration, is not recorded by Rosove. One of the few first-hand accounts of Scott's Discovery expedition to have been separately published. At one stage Armitage was supposed to lead the expedition, but when Scott was finally placed in charge he was relegated to second in command. This did not stop him from becoming the first person to walk on the Polar ice cap and to discover three immense glaciers in the process. A scarce book. Taurus 43; cf. Rosove 17.A1a; Spence 67; Conrad p.110.
