SIGNED on front free endpaper volume ii: "Yours truly / Ernest H Shackleton / 1910." Provenance: Purchased from Maggs Bros. 31.3.1976. (pencil note vol. ii, ink note vol i.). Shackleton summarises his achievement in the preface: "In the spring and summer of 1908-9 three sledging parties left winter quarters; one went south and attained the most southerly latitude ever reached by man, [and] another reached the South Magnetic Pole for the first time." In his introduction, H.R. Mill records, "how the enthusiasm and devotion of an individual has once more vindicated the character of the British nation for going far and faring well in the face of difficulties before which it would have been no dishonour to turn back."
