SCOTT, Robert Falcon.
Scott's last expedition.
Smith, Elder, London 1913. First edition. 2 volumes, SIGNED BY SCOTT'S SISTER GRACE (Monsie) on the front free endpaper of both volumes, with "from her mother H. Scott" written beneath that in volume one, and "From his mother" on half-title to same volume. 8vo., xxvi, 633; xvi, 534pp., profusely illustrated with photographs, maps, plans, sketches, etc., including 18 in colour, original blue cloth gilt, modern slipcase, hinges very lightly rubbed else an excellent set.
A wonderfully poignant association copy. The inscription on the endpaper appears to be in Scott's sister's hand; that on the half-title is probably in his mother's. "What Scott wrote at the end of his life was an inspiration in meeting death with supreme dignity, and his words entreat reading again and again" (Rosove). "This is undoubtedly the most widely-known of all Antarctic expeditions and publications. Readers, having absorbed Scott's account of the expedition in the first volume, would have discovered in the second volume a host of first-hand accounts, deserving of more weight today: Cherry-Garrard's account of the Winter Journey, Victor Campbell's narrative of the Northern Party, Griffith Taylor on the Western Journeys, Raymond Priestley on the ascent of Erebus, preliminary scientific reports from Edward Wilson's staff and throughout the unrivalled photography of Herbert Ponting" - Taurus. Taurus 77; Books on Ice, 6.10; Rosove 290.A1; Spence 1056; Conrad p188.
