[BRUCE, William S.]

Life in the Antarctic. Photographs by the Scottish Antarctic Expedition.

Gowans & Gray, London 1907. First edition. 12 mo (15 x 10 cm), [8], 67, [5] pp., 64 photographs in black & white, advertisements at beginning and end (foxed); pictorial wrappers on parchment, some browning to covers as often, generally an excellent copy of a scarce item. Provenance: bookplate to front pastedown of Lewes Balfour Bequest; British Ornithologists Union's stamp to verso of first ad and page 4.

A trifling little book of photographs taken by expedition members, but irresistable and winsome owing to its appealing cover, multicolored and illustrated with chinstrap penguins and an Antarctic scene all in period style. This booklet was intended to advertise the sale of photographs that were available by inquiry to the director of the Scottish Oceanographical Laboratory in Edinburgh Rosove. Rosove, 53 A1.
