Fanning sailed from Connnecticut on a voyage for sealskins in 1792. Over the next 25 years he made several journeys to the Pacific and South Atlantic. The book includes an account of the first American naval exploration to the southern hemisphere in 1829-30, sponsored by the U.S. government and under the command of Benjamin Pendleton.
